Easy Scone Recipes
There are many scone recipes, whether you love sweet or savory, you’ll find one that you and your kids will love to bake.
Scones are great to have as a snack and Home-made Scones, both sweet and savory, are quickly and easily made.


Whether they a served hot or cold they are a tea-time favorite, are also great for kids to have in their lunchboxes.


The more traditional raising agent for scones (also for the various quick breads made without yeast) is bicarbonate of soda plus cream of tartar, used in conjunction with either fresh or sour milk, nowadays baking powder is used with plain flour or self-raising flour is chosen.

As a child I loved to bake and eat Cheese Scones, I would often have them for my lunch instead of a sandwich..they were great with lots of butter.
Whenever we had a family holiday to Devon we would always stop and have a Cream Tea..which included a fruit scone, clotted cream and strawberry jam..Delicious.


Spending an afternoon baking scones with your kids is a good way for you to enjoy some quality time together, as kids get older their lives become busier and just spending an hour or so baking with you, will give you time to catch up and talk as well as create some lovely food.

Cheese and Chilli Scones
These warm and spicy scones are great served with soup instead of bread and are also ideal with salad.
To make 8 Scones you will need:-

230g Self-Raising Flour
40g Unsalted Butter, plus extra for greasing
60g Mature Cheddar cheese, Grated
1 Large Egg
100ml Milk
2 Tablespoon Grated Cheese, for topping
A Big Pinch of Salt
A Big Pinch of Pepper
A Big Pinch of Dried Chili Flakes

Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7.
Take a little butter on some kitchen paper and grease the baking tray so that your scones do not stick.
Put the flour, salt, pepper and dried chili flakes in a large bowl and mix well.
With a knife, cut the butter into small pieces and then add to the flour and mix, with the tips of your fingers rub the butter into the flour until it looks like crumbs.


Stir in the grated cheese and then make a well in the middle of the bowl.
Crack the egg into a measuring jug and add enough milk to make up to 150ml, with a fork mix the egg together with the milk and then pour three quarters of this into the hollow you made in the bowl.
Using a round-bladed table knife, stir the ingredients to make a soft but not too sticky dough.


If the dough is stiff, dry and very crumbly then stir in more milk 1 Tablespoon at a time.
Lightly sprinkle some flour on to your work surface, then tip out the dough on to it.
Flour you hands so that the dough will not stick and work the dough into a rough looking ball.


Flatten the ball down and roll out to make a circle about 18cm across.
With a table knife cut the dough into 8 wedges, like you are cutting a pizza.
Brush the tops with a little of the milk mixture or use some plain milk if you have used it all.

Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top of each scone.
Using a metal spatula, lift up each scone and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart, as they spread during cooking.
Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until they are golden brown, remove from the oven and place on a wire rack until just cool enough to eat.

Lemon and Thyme Scones
When you bake these scones your home will fill with beautiful smells, the kids will come running to eat them.

To make 8 Scones you will need:-

230g Self-Raising Flour
3 Tbls Caster Sugar
1 Unwaxed Lemon
A Big Pinch of Fresh Thyme Leaves
40g Unsalted Butter, plus extra for greasing
1 Large Egg
About 100ml Milk

Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7.
Put the flour and sugar in a medium mixing bowl, grate the lemon to remove the zest and put into the flour with the thyme leaves.
Mix these together with your hands, then cut the butter into small pieces and add to the flour, with your fingertips rub together until it resembles breadcrumbs.


Crack the egg into a measuring jug and mix with a fork add the enough milk to make up to 150ml.Make a hollow in the center of the flour and pour three-quarters of the milk mixture into the hollow and mix with a table knife for form a soft dough.


If the dough look dry and crumbly and won’t stick together then add a little more of the milk and egg mix 1 tablespoon at a time.
Tip the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knead for a few second to make it look smoother.

Put some flour on your hands and then pat out the ball of dough until it is about 2 cm thick.
Using a cookie cutter or a small glass cut out rounds, then pick up any scarps of dough and do this again.


Put all the rounds on your prepared baking sheet, arranging them slightly apart and bake in the oven for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown.
Carefully remove from the tray and place on a wire rack to cool, best served with butter and can also be toasted.

Fruit Scones
For a Traditional Devon Tea Serve these scones while still warm, with butter, whipped or clotted cream and Raspberry Jam.

This Scone Recipe will make 6 to 8 Scones and you will need:-
250g Self-Raising Flour
1/2 Tsp Salt
50g Butter
25g Caster Sugar
150ml Milk
25g Raisins

Sift the flour with the salt into a mixing bowl. Cut the butter into small chunks and add it to the flour and salt.
Rub the butter using your fingertips until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Then stir in the sugar and the raisins.


Make a big well in the middle of the flour and pour in the milk.
Mix with a palette knife to make a spongy dough
Tip the dough on to a floured work surface, it should be handled as little as possible, so knead until just smooth.


Roll the dough out until it is 2.5cm thick and stamp fluted cutter. Re-roll and use the trimmings.
Carefully place the scones on a lightly floured baking sheet and sprinkle each one with a little extra flour.


Put the baking tray in the oven and bake the scones for 7 to 8 minutes until well risen and golden brown.
Remove from the oven, using oven gloves, and lift the scones on to a wire rack, with a fish slice, to cool.
