Cheese Straws

These cheese straws are very tasty and so quick for you or your kids to make, they are ideal for a snack, party appetizers and great for any childs lunchbox.

You can make the pastry with most cheeses, I always find for me a strong cheddar is best but many children may just prefer a mild one.

80g Plain Flour (plus extra for dusting)
40g Butter (chilled and cut into small pieces)extra for greasing
40g Cheddar (grated)
1 Small egg (beaten)

Makes 12
1.Preheat the oven 180c (350f) Gas 4.
2.Sift the flour into a large bowl.
3.Add the butter and rub into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs.
4.Add the grated cheddar to the flour and butter and mix together.
5.Stir the beaten egg into the flour until the mixture starts to come together, then using your hands work into a ball.
6.Sprinkle some flour onto your work surface and a rolling pin.
7.Taking half of your pastry roll out into a rectangle about a quarter of a cm thick.
8.Cut width ways into strips carefully lift them onto the baking tray, leave a space between each one.
9.Bake for 10 minutes, until golden.
10.Leave the twists to cool for a couple of minutes on the tray before putting them on a wire rack.

You can eat these warm or you can cool them completely and store in an air tight container, to use for a family picnic, or your childs lunchbox, or as a snack to dip in hummus.
Enjoy…
