Winter Cooking with Kids

Winter cooking with kids does not only have to be about cooking treats, but you can teach them about the winter seasonal foods such as:-

Vegetables:-

Leeks, Squash, Cabbage, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Carrots, Parsnips, Swedes, Kohlrabi, Beetroot, Celeriac, Jerusalem Artichokes.

There are so many brilliant things that you can do with these vegetables and teaching your child about winter cooking at a young age will give them a great understanding of the seasons and the different things you can make with the veg that they will cook when they are older, such as Soups, Stews, Pot Roasts with Chicken or Beef Joints, or use them in a Crock Pot.

Fruit:-

Apples, Figs, Lemons, Oranges, Passion Fruit, Pears, Quince.

Herbs:-

Coriander, Curly Parsley, Rosemary, Sage.

Meat:-

Duck, Goose, Grouse, Guinea Fowl, Hare, Mallard, Partridge, Pheasant, Pork, Rabbit, Turkey, Venison, Wood Pigeon.

Fish & Seafood:-

Brill, Clams, Cockles, Cod, Coley, Conger Eel, Crab, Dab, Dover Sole, Grey Mullet, Haddock, Halibut, Hake, John Dory, Langoustine, Lemon Sole, Lobster, Mackeral, Monk Fish, Mussels, Oysters, Plaice, Pollock, Prawns, Scallops, Sea Bream, Sea Bass, Skate, Turbot, Winkles.

I bet you didn't realise there were so many things in season that you could use during your winter cooking fun with the kids.

Soups and Stews

Hearty Soups and Stews are nourishing and can be satisfying, having a bowlful on a cold winter's day after a hard days work or play, soups and stews can be made the day before or you can use a crock pot and leave them cooking whilst you are out for the day and come home to lovely cooking smells through out your home. I love making soups I find winter cooking so fulfilling after the family have been out in the cold all day and then coming in to the warm to a delicious bowl of hearty warming soup or stew, there is always a smile.

Do the kids always ask if they can help with the Holiday Cooking, and you always put them off, well you shouldn't the more you get them to help you the better for them and for you.

You'll create memories that will last a lifetime, have quality time with your kids and teach them a life skill,as they get older and have their own families they'll be able to pass on Family Traditions started by you or your Mom.

Christmas is a great time of year for spending time with friends and family, allow your children to help with cooking the Christmas treats, Cookies, Mince Pies, Chocolate Truffles, they can not only give them to guests when they visit over the festive season they can give them to family and friends as Gifts too.

You may decide this year that you want to build your own Gingerbread House like Hansel and Gretel.

Or maybe you would like to spend some time baking Christmas Cookies and treats, the kids will love using their own Cookie Cutters and wearing their special Christmas Apron whilst doing this, along with some background festive music and a glass of Mulled Wine for you, you can make a real family day of it...
