by Dani
( Butte, Montana,U,S,A)

We often make this Simple Chocolate cake, my Mom calls it Chocolate Ribbon Cake as the grated Chocolate is mixed with the vanilla sponge and forms ribbons of Chocolate in the cake as it cooks.

The ingredients you will need to make ths Chocolate Cake are..

2 Cups of all-purpose Flour (Plain Flour)

Pinch of Salt

2 Teaspoons Baking Powder

6 Tablespoons Margarine

6 Tablespoons Sugar

1 Egg, Beaten

1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

2/3 Cup Milk

4 Squares Semi-Sweet (Plain) Chocolate, Coarsley Grated

Confectioners' (Icing Sugar) Sugar to Decorate

Firstly sift the flour, salt and baking powder into a mixing bowl.

Rub the margarine into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

Add the sugar, egg, vanilla extract and milk, and stir with a wooden spoon unil smooth, the mixture should have a soft dropping consistency.

Spoon a third of the cake pan and sprinkle a third of the chocolate over the top.

Continue these layers, finishing with a layer of chocolate.

Bake in a moderately hot oven (190C/375F/Gas Mark 5) for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to (180C/350F/Gas Mark 4) and bake for a further 1 hour.

When the cake is cooked turn out on a place on a wire rack to cool. Sprinkle with Icing sugar before serving.
